It was the largest winning margin in the history of the World Cup. The Netherlands was given a massive target of 400 when Glenn Maxwell and David Warner scored hundreds in contrast to Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne scoring fifty. Needless to say, the Dutch were defeated by 309 runs and were never able to put up a serious chase.
As it has been throughout the competition, the new ball under lights was a difficult task for the batters, and the Netherlands lacks a response to Australia’s pace attack or Adam Zampa’s skill. Vikramjit Singh played a daring role in a couple of the boundaries in the first few overs, but after the opening stand was broken, the floodgates opened and the Australians were never let up. The Dutch hitters were unable to connect with the ball because of the heat of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins. Australia found the pacy hard length to be rather effective, and Zampa’s arrival sped up the result.
For the Netherlands, it was a tough wake-up call when they had to face a huge attack by Australia’s batsmen at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, another excellent batting ground. After Mitchell Marsh was out early, Warner’s spectacular century and his century stand with Smith had set Australia fire. But the Netherlands responded flawlessly for a time, causing a mini-collapse, and at 290/6, the Dutch would have hoped to stop the last effort. Then Maxwell took place. The explosive batsman, who had been struggling lately, found his timing right away and then went crazy towards the end to record the fastest-ever World Cup century with 40 balls, which is nine balls faster than Aiden Markram’s success at this same site during the opening week of the tournament.
